Monday, 10 February – Going Up into the Land on Tu B’Shvat

  • Morning arrival in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative (today’s program depends on arrival time).
  • Celebrate your arrival on Tu B’shvat by planting a tree at Neot Kedumim, Israel’s biblical landscape reserve.
  • Visit the new Israel Innovation Center, located in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, to learn though its interactive exhibit about new advancements by Israeli Hi-tech Start-Ups in fields such as medicine, security, aero-space, agriculture and alternative energy.
  • Relive David Ben Gurion declaring the new State of Israel at We Hereby Declare in the Shalom Tower (alternate site for Independence Hall program during renovation).
  • Lunch on own
  • Tour Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as Zion Gate from which Jonah tried to flee and where Solomon brought the Cedars of Lebanon on the way to Jerusalem.  Today paintings and sculptures have been installed in its ancient alleys.
  • Shehekhiyanu/Welcome ceremony on top of Tel Jaffa overlooking modern Tel Aviv.
  • Check-in to the Dan Panorama Hotel on Tel Aviv's Mediterranean Coast.
  • Welcome dinner at Maganda Restaurant in Tel Aviv’s old Yemenite Quarter.

Tuesday, 11 February – The Hebrew City and the Jewish State

  • Walking tour of Tel Aviv’s historic Neve Tzeddek neighbourhood, once home to Zionist cultural pioneers Eliezer Ben Yehuda, S. Y. Agnon and Rabbi Kook.
  • ITC Touch: Discover City of Sand and Sea, a mosaic fountain created by artist and writer Nachum Gutman portraying scenes from the history of Jaffa and Tel Aviv.
  • Hear about the establishment of Tel Aviv at the Founders' Monument then stroll down Rothschild Boulevard to view the Bauhaus architecture for which central Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Lunch on your own and free time to explore the Nachalat Binyamin crafts fair. While there checkout the nearby Carmel Market and bohemian Sheinkin Street All Three of these Tel Aviv icons meet at the "Magen David Junction".
  • Tour the Israeli Museum at the Yitzhak Rabin Center for a critical look at Israeli history and society.
  • OR: Visit the Palmach Museum in Ramat Aviv to learn about the elite  underground organization which played a critical role in the founding of the State of Israel.

Wednesday, 12 February – Jerusalem: Ancient, Modern and Tasty

  • Guided tour of the Ayalon Institute – An underground bullet factory in Rehovot used by Jewish forces before the founding of the State of Israel.
  • Travel to Jerusalem through the biblical Ayalon Valley and the gorge of Shaar Hagai (Bab El Wad), site of critical battles during Israel’s War of Independence.
  • Look out over the Old City of Jerusalem and Temple Mount from Mount Scopus.
  • Multimedia tour of the new Six Day War Heritage Museum on Ammunition Hill, the site of the fiercest and most costly battle of the Six Day War.
  • Tasting tour of the bustling Machane Yehuda Market to discover Jerusalem's many flavors from East and West.

Thursday, 13 February – Jerusalem:  Sites and Sounds

  • Lecture on Religious Pluralism in Israel by Rabbi Mauricio Balter, Executive Director of Masorti Olami.
  • Discover the archaeological story of the Western Wall and episodes of Jewish life in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago at Robinson's Arch and the Southern Wall Excavations, including a recent discovery related to the Chanukah story.
  • Visit the traditional prayer area of the Western Wall.
  • Unique tour of the Western Wall Tunnels, including impressive new discoveries with Avi Solomon, the site's former chief archaeologist (subject to availability).
  • Lunch on own in Jewish Quarter
  • Tour less visited sites in the Jewish Quarter: The Israelite Tower, a 2,600 year old "archaeological puzzle" beneath the modern day neighborhood, the restored Hurva Synagogue, Karaite Museum and hear about the remarkable new discoveries under the ruins of the Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue.
  • Free time to shop and explore on own.
  • Guided tour of the new Hebrew Music Museum in downtown Jerusalem's Nachalat Shiva neighborhood to learn about the history of Jewish music from biblical times and through seven different regions of the Diaspora.

Friday, 14 February – Holocaust, Remembrance and Continuity

  • Tour of Yad Vashem – Israel's national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Historical Museum and Children’s Memorial.
  • Lunch on own
  • Meaningful visit to the Mt. Herzl Cemetery to discover chapters in the history of Israel at the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Theordore Herzl and Hannah Senesch.
  • Free time to relax and prepare for Shabbat.
  • Shabbat candle lighting with Rabbi Kupchik
Friday/Shabbat evening options:
  • Join hundreds of other Jews from around the world to Greet the Sabbath at the Western Wall. Option to join the new egalitarian Kabbalat Shabbat minyan at the Masorti Kotel, where men and women can pray together (begins at 6:00 pm).
  • OR: Attend Friday night services at a local Masorti (Conservative) synagogue.

  • Late afternoon walking tour to the historic Montefiore Windmill to discover the first neighbourhood built outside the walls of the Old City.
  • AND/OR:  Walking tour to First Temple period burial site at Ketef Hinnom – Where archaeologists discovered the oldest biblical text ever found.

Sunday, 16 February – Masada and the Dead Sea:  Freedom Fighters or Fanatics?

  • Tour the ruins of Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found and hear about the ascetic sect which lived there 2,000 years ago.
  • Visit the ancient synagogue of Ein Gedi to see its fascinating mosaic floor with an oath than members swore to preserve the secret of the community.
    • Set out early across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod's palace and the last outpost of Jewish independence. Discussion: Which Jewish Legacy – Masada or Yavne?  What decision did our ancesters make?
  • Swim in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, at a local resort.  The resort also has a fresh water pool and spa facilities.  Massage and spa treatments available by prior reservation at own expense.
  • Lunch at Dead Sea resort.
  • Check in to Herods Dead Sea Hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea.

Monday, 17 February – Negev Highlands: Primeval Desert Beauty

  • Travel to the Negev Highlands.
  • Tour of David Ben Gurion's House on Kibbutz Sde Boker to learn about his vision for developing the Negev.
  • Visit Ben Gurion's Gravesite and look out at the majestic cliffs of the Zin Valley.
  • Time permitting: Travel south through the Arava Valley to Timna, an ancient Egyptian copper mining site, to see magnificent natural rock formations and the only pharaonic rock carving in Israel (later requires climbing stairs).
  • Travel to Eilat

  • Day at leisure in Eilat to swim, snorkel and relax.

  • Early departure for Petra to explore the amazing red sandstone structures carved by the ancient Nabateans.  Enter Jordan at the Arava Crossing and travel to Petra by bus (approx. 2.5 hours). Tour its Treasury ("Khaznieh"), Roman theatre, impressive caves and rock formations of this Nabatean City. Buffet lunch included.
