Visit the Armored Corps Memorial at Latrun – See and enter real tanks and hear about the fierce battles fought here in Israel’s War of Independence and how the Burma Road saved Jerusalem. Travel to Jerusalem via Shaar Hagai in the Judean Hills and hear more about the struggle for the road to Jerusalem during the War of Independence. Shekhiyanu- Welcome ceremony with Cantor Cohen on Mt. of Olives overlooking the Temple Mount and Old City – Jerusalem’s most iconic view. Check-in to the luxurious David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem. Jerusalem: An Ancient Jewish Legacy Tour of Jewish Quarter including the Burnt House to experience a moving presentation about the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in the year 70 CE, Broad Wall built by King Hezekiah 2,700 years ago, panoramic view from the Rooftops of the market places and the Byzantine Cardo, an ancient still functioning market street, followed by free time to shop and explore on own. Discover the story of Zionism’s founding father Theodore Herzl at the multimedia Herzl Museum, followed by a meaningful visit to the Mt. Herzl Cemetery to discover chapters in the history of Israel at the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Theordore Herzl and Hannah Senesch. Lunch on own. Free time to prepare for Shabbat and write notes for the Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site. Shabbat candle lighting together. Greet the Sabbath/Kabbalat Shabbat at the egalitarian Masorati Kotel together as a congregation. (Bus to Kotel) Time for personal reflection on our first visit to the Western Wall. Afternoon walking tour to the historic Montefiore Windmill to discover fascinating story of the first neighbourhood built outside the walls of the Old City. AND/OR: Walking tour to the First Temple period Jewish burial site at Ketef Hinnom – Where archaeologists found the oldest biblical text ever discovered. Holocaust, Remembrance and Continuity Visit the world renown Chagall Windows at Hadassah Hospital. Tour of Yad Vashem – Israel’s national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Holocaust History Museum and Children‛s Memorial. (Children under age 10 are not permitted in Yad Vashem’s historical museum). Alternate program for younger children: Visit Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo, where you’ll see animals which lived in Israel during biblical times. (Children must be accompanied by an adult). Option – Israel Museum, instead of Yad Vashem. Visit to the Israel Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book and the Model of Jerusalem in the first century. Free time to explore additional exhibitions on own – Recommendations: Modern Israeli art, Synagogue interiors in the Judaica section and the Archaeology Wing. Rejoin the rest of group. Lunch on own. Chocolate making workshop at the delicious Galita Chocolate Factory on Kibbutz Tzuba. Tour and wine tasting at the boutique Tzuba Winery. Jerusalem of Old Take part in a moving B’nai Mitzvah Ceremony led by Cantor Cohen at the egalitarian Masorati Kotel (at Robinson’s Arch) to connect a Jewish past with a Jewish future, including an opportunity to renew wedding vows under chuppa or celebrate milestones (Please arrange in advance with Cantor Cohen). Masada and the Dead Sea: Freedom Fighters of Fanatics Set out early across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod’s palace and the last outpost of Jewish independence. The Hebrew City and the Jewish State Guided tour of the Ayalon Institute in Rehovot – an underground bullet factory used by Jewish forces before the founding of the State of Israel. At Independence Hall relive David Ben Gurion declaring the new State of Israel. Hear about the establishment of Tel Aviv standing at the Founders’ Monument then stroll down Rothschild Boulevard to view the Bauhaus architecture for which central Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch on own and free time to explore the lively Nachalat Binyamin crafts fair.
