Arrive in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative. Tour the alleys of Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as the Gate of Zion. Shekhiyanu-Welcome ceremony on top of Tel Jaffa overlooking modern Tel Aviv. Check-in to the Carlton Hotel on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean Coast. Welcome dinner and orientation at Goshen Restaurant.

Defense, Geopolitics and Pioneering in the Western Negev

Travel to the western Negev. Visit Kibbutz Alumim to meet with a local kibbutznik and hear first-hand about living on the Gaza border, pioneering in the Negev and kibbutz as a community. Lunch in Kibbutz Alumim’s communal dining room. Discover hi-tech agriculture on the Salad Trail on Moshav Talmei Yosef. Continue to Mitzpe Ramon to check-in to the Beresheet Hotel. Learn about the natural history of the region at the multimedia Makhtesh Ramon Visitors Center dedicated to fallen Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon. Lunch on own. Explore Makhtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater) on foot and by jeep to discover magnificant desert landscapes and a fascinating window into the earth’s past. Travel to Eilat on the Red Sea. Thursday, 2 November

The Wonders of Petra

Early departure for Petra to explore the amazing red sandstone structures carved by the ancient Nabateans. Enter Jordan at the Arava Crossing and travel to Petra by bus (approx. 2.5 hours). Tour its Treasury (“Khaznieh”), Roman theatre, impressive caves and rock formations of this Nabatean City. Buffet lunch included. Return to Eilat. Dinner on own.

Friday, 3 November

North to Jerusalem and Welcoming Shabbat

Visit Timna, an ancient Egyptian copper mining site, where rock formations have “created” a magnificent natural sculpture garden. Travel north throug the Arava and Dead Sea Valleys to Jerusalem. Check in to the Leonardo Plaza Hotel in Jerusalem. Shabbat candle lighting: 4:12 pm (In Jerusalem Shabbat candles are lit 40 minutes before sundown). Friday/Shabbat evenings options: Join hundreds of other Jews from around the world to Greet the Sabbath at the Western Wall. (Bus both ways). Festive Shabbat dinner at hotel in private room.

Saturday, 4 November

And on the Seventh Day… in Jerusalem.

Shabbat morning services at a local Masorati (Conservative) synagogue, followed by Kiddush and an update about the Masorati movement in Israel. Traditional Shabbat Lunch at hotel. Afternoon walking tour to Jaffa Gate and the Christian Quarter, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, part of the Via Dolorosa and Deir Es-Sultan (the Ethiopian compound on the Church of the Holy Sepulcher’s roof). Havdallah with Rabbi Spiegel. Free evening. Dinner on own. Recommendation for the evening: Visit the First Station Compound, Jerusalem’s restored Ottoman railway station turned restaurant – cafe area or the Ben Yehuda Street Pedestrian Mall.

What’s New that’s Old

Tour of the City of David excavations to hear about new discoveries and what they are revealing about ancient Jerusalem. Discover the archaeological story of the Western Wall and episodes Jewish life in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago at Robinson’s Arch and Southern Wall Excavations, including a recent discovery related to the Chanukah story. Lunch at Between the Arches Restaurant. Visit the traditional prayer area of the Western Wall. Unique tour of the Western Wall Tunnels with Dr. Avi Solomon, the site’s chief archaeologist. Look out from the roof of the Austrian Hospice for a unique view of the Old City. Then check out it’s authentic Viennese coffeehaus. Free evening. Dinner on own.

History and Antiquities Off the Beaten Track

Tour of the Menachem Begin Heritage Center Museum for a multimedia presentation on the history of Israel seen through the life of Menachem Begin. Visit Ketef Hinom – An antiquities site on the grounds of the Begin Center, where archaeologists discovered the oldest biblical text ever found. Lunch on own. Guided tour of Israel’s architecturally fascinating Supreme Court Building and an opportunity to learn about the Israeli legal system. Walking tour of the quaint Nachalaot neighborhoods to discover a world of history, folklore and ethnicity just blocks from downtown Jerusalem. Tasting tour of the raucous Machane Yehuda Market using Shuk Bites – A culinary scavenger hunt. Free evening. Dinner on own.

Tuesday, 7 November

Geopoliitcs and Fine Wine – Explore Herodian

King Herod’s desert palace and tomb tucked inside a mountain which Herod built. Visit Kfar Etzion, a kibbutz conquered by the Jordanian Army during Israel’s War of Independence and resettled by the children of its former pioneers and after the Six Day War. Lunch on own. Guided tour of the Avashalom Stalactite Cave to discover a magnificent underground world. Tour and tasting at either the Flam Winery on Moshav Eshtaol or the Katlav Winery on Moshav Nes Harim, both west of Jerusalem. Return to Jerusalem. Dinner at Eucalyptus Restaurant.

Jewish Roots in the Jewish Quarter

Tour of synagogues in the Jewish Quarter, including the Four Sephardic Synagogues, restored Hurva Synagogue and Karaite Museum. Hear about the remarkable discoveries under the ruins of the Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue. Assemble an “archaeological puzzle” at the Israelite Tower to reconstruct a major event in biblical Israel. The Israelite Tower is a closed archaeological site which will be opened specially for your group. Lunch on own. Geopolitical tour of Jerusalem to examine several key geopolitical issues impacting on the city, including borders, building and settlement (Jewish and Arab) and Israel’s security fence. Wrapping Up and Departure

Visit Yad Lakashish, a unique employment project helping Jerusalem’s elderly, including a stop in its shop “where shopping is a mitzvah!” Tour of the Archaeology Wing of the Israel Museum a with an emphasis on “Jewish Archaeology”, followed by free time to visit other exhibits on own. Recommendations: Modern Israeli art, Synagogue interiors in the Judaica Wing and the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden. Remainder of afternoon free to explore on your own and get in last minute shopping. Late check out. Farewell Dinner at Olive and Fish Restaurant.
