Depart USA on an overnight flight to Israel

Monday, 12 June

Going up into the Land

Arrive in Israel to be met and assisted by your ITC representative. Tour the alleys of Old Jaffa, the ancient port city once known as the Gate of Zion. Shekhiyanu-Welcome ceremony on top of Tel Jaffa overlooking modern Tel Aviv. Walking tour of historic “Little Tel Aviv” – Discover the quaint Neve Tzeddek neighbourhood that gave birth to the “first Hebrew city in 2,000 years”. Check-in at the Dan Panorama Hotel on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean Coast. Dinner on own.

Tuesday, 13 June

The Hebrew City and the Jewish State

Engage in hands on tzedakah reclaiming food for needy people by picking vegetables with Leket near Rehovot. Travel to Rehovot for a guided tour of the Ayalon Institute – an underground bullet factory used by Jewish forces before the founding of the State of Israel. Relive David Ben Gurion declaring the new State of Israel at Independence Hall. Hear about the establishment of Tel Aviv at the Founders’ Monument then stroll down Rothschild Boulevard to view the Bauhaus architecture for which central Tel Aviv’s “White City” was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lunch on your own and free time to explore the Nachalat Binyamin crafts fair. While there checkout the nearby Carmel Market and bohemian Sheinkin Street – All Three of these Tel Aviv icons meet at the “Magen David Junction”. Optional visit to the Israeli Museum at the Yitzhak Rabin Center for a critical look at Israeli society. Free time to swim in the Mediterranean Sea and enjoy beachside Promenade. Dinner on own.

North to the Galilee

Visit the Palmach Museum for a multimedia presentation about the elite underground organization that played a critical role in founding the State of Israel. Depart for northern Israel. Explore part of an ancient water system wading the the tunnel of Mei Kedem at Alona Park. Lunch on own. Guided tour of the former Atlit detention camp where the British held Holocaust refugees, who tried to enter the country “illegally”. Board an “illegal immigration ship” to watch a multimedia presentation about the heroic pre-State immigration. Discover ancient crafts and donkey rides at Kfar Kedem. Dinner at Kfar Kedem.

Mystics, Geopolitics and Israel’s Finest

Tour the old synagogues and picturesque alleyways of the mystical city of Tzfat and discover the origins of our Friday night service where Lecha Dodi was written. Meeting and tour with Eli Sharoni, executive director of Peula on Kibbutz Tzivon, an organization that raises and trains guide dogs to help blind persons. Lunch on own. Raft or Kayak down the Jordan River – Great way to cool off on a hot day. Tour to the Golan Heights for a special perspective on Israel’s complex geopolitics as we visit former Syrian bunkers overlooking Israel and then look out from the peak of strategic Mt. Bental. Barbeque dinner with young Israeli soldiers who are giving some of the best years of their lives to the defense of Israel.

Friday, 16 June

Across Israel: A Multicultural Jewish Society

Tour of Lavi led by a local kibbutznik to hear about kibbutz life. Discover Ethiopian Jewish culture at the Germachin Center in Beit Shean. Hear a personal account of this community’s modern day Exodus story and about the challenges facing the Ethiopian Israeli community today. Picnic lunch and swim at Sachne. Continue south through the Jordan Valley and ascend to Jerusalem. Explore the raucous Machane Yehuda Market and take in a slice of local life as you see Jerusalemites prepare for Shabbat. On the way, see the nearby picturesque Nachalaot neighborhoods. Check-in to the Leonardo Plaza Hotel in Jerusalem. Free time to relax and prepare for Shabbat. Attend the “Israeli Kabbalat Shabbat” service at the First Station Compound. Shabbat Dinner at Shakra Restaurant.

And on the Seventh Day… in Jerusalem

Optional Shabbat morning services at a local Reform synagogue or morning at leisure. Lunch on own Visit the Israel Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book and the Model of Jerusalem in the first century. Free time to explore additional exhibitions on own – Recommendations: Modern Israeli art, Synagogue interiors in the Judaica section and the Archaeology Wing. Late afternoon walking tour to the historic Montefiore Windmill to discover the first neighbourhood built outside the walls of the Old City. AND/OR: Walking tour to First Temple period burial site at Ketef Hinnom – Where archaeologists discovered the oldest biblical text ever found. Havdalah with Rabbi Greenspon. Dinner on own. Watch the Night Spectacular – Sound and light show at the Tower of David.

The Old City of Jerusalem – An Ancient Jewish Legacy

Please choose one of the following ancient Jerusalem touring options: Explore the City of David using the Bible and archaeology to make Jerusalem’s stones tell the story of the city’s ancient past. Wade through Hezekiah’s Tunnel – A still flowing ancient water system that saved the city of Jerusalem 2,700 years ago (dry option available). Visit the the Western Wall to connect with an ancient Jewish legacy. Walk through the Western Wall Tunnels to explore underground Jerusalem. Lunch on own in Jewish Quarter Tour of Jewish Quarter including the Herodian Mansions, Cardo, Broad Wall and Rooftops followed by free time to shop and explore on own. Free evening. Dinner on own. Recommendation for the evening: Visit the First Station Compound, Jerusalem’s restored Ottoman railway station turned restaurant – cafe area.

Masada and the Dead Sea: Freedom Fighters or Fanatics?

Set out early across the Judean Desert and ascend Masada by cable car to tour the ruins of Herod’s palace and the last outpost of Jewish independence. Discussion: Which Jewish Legacy – Masada or Yavne? Swim in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, at a local resort. The resort also has a fresh water pool and spa facilities. Massage and spa treatments available by prior reservation at own expense. Lunch at Dead Sea resort. Time permitting: Walk in Ein Gedi Nature Reserve opportunity to bath in waterfalls and hear how David hid there from King Saul.

Holocaust, Remembrance and Continuity

Tour of Yad Vashem Israel’s national Holocaust memorial and museum, including the Holocaust History Museum and Children‛s Memorial. Children under age 10 are not permitted in Yad Vashem’s historical museum). Alternate program for younger children: Visit Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo, where you’ll see animals which lived in Israel during biblical times. (Children must be Accompanied by an adult. Zoo visit).Lunch on own. Discover the story of Zionism’s founding father Theodore Herzl at the multimedia Herzl Museum, followed by a meaningful visit to the Mt. Herzl Cemetery to discover chapters in the history of Israel at the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Theordore Herzl and Hannah Senesch. Engage in hands on tzedakah preparing food packages for distribution to some of Israel’s neediest people at Pantry Packers in Jerusalem. Dinner on own.

Digging up the Past and Underground Adventure

Drive to Beit Guvrin in the Judean Lowlands, crossing enroute the biblical Elah Valley, where David and Goliath fought. Dig up Israel’s past by participating in a hands on archaeological excavation with Dig for a Day in Beit Guvrin National Park. Lunch on own. Plant a tree in Israel to commemorate your visit and honor a loved one. Visit the stunning Avshalom Stalactite Cave in the Judean Hills. Tour and tasting at the Katlav Winery on Moshav Nes Harim. Return to Jerusalem. Free evening. Dinner on own.

The Wonders of Petra

Early departure for Petra to explore the amazing red sandstone structures carved by the ancient Nabateans. Enter Jordan at the Arava Crossing and travel to Petra by bus (approx. 2.5 hours). Tour its Treasury (“Khaznieh”), Roman theatre, impressive caves and rock formations of this Nabatean City. Buffet lunch included. Return to Eilat. Dinner on own.
